In this humor-laced drama, Pulitzer Prize winner David Lindsay-Abaire (Rabbit Hole) explores the struggles, shifting loyalties and unshakeable hopes that come with having next to nothing in America. Margie Walsh can’t catch a break. Laid off from her job at the dollar store, Margie is faced with the reality that South Boston is providing her the same level of opportunity it always has: none. Wry, rough around the edges and ready to make a change, she goes to seek out the one who got away—both from "Southie" and from her. Instead, she finds herself in the 'burbs and out of her element, facing the question: is opportunity granted or earned? Good People takes an affectionate look at the 'haves' and 'have nots' through the eyes of characters who won't be ignored.
The season continues with the irreverent, yet poignant comedy Mrs. Mannerly starring Dale Hodges. Inspired by hilarious memories of a childhood etiquette class, playwright Jeffrey Hatcher conjures up the world of a ten-year-old studying manners. Set in 1967, Mrs. Mannerly is a demanding teacher, and no student in her thirty-six years of etiquette classes has ever achieved a perfect score. But, when he discovers her secret past, Young Jeffrey is determined to be the first to achieve this feat. This unique comic tale reveals truths about the face we present and the real selves that lie inside.
For the holidays, Ensemble Theatre will bring back one of its most cherished family-friendly musicals with the return of Alice in Wonderland. A magical musical retelling of Lewis Carroll's classic story, this sassy version is the toe-tapping tale of a lost girl, a cool cat, a wild hare, and the original "dancing queen." The Queen of Hearts is back to dish up her special recipe for justice and all of Wonderland awaits Alice’s trial.
This spirited drama centers on legendary psychoanalyst Dr. Sigmund Freud, who invites a then little-known professor, C.S. Lewis, to his home in London. Lewis, expecting to be called on the carpet for satirizing Freud in a recent book, soon realizes Freud has a much more significant agenda. On the day England enters World War II, Freud and Lewis clash on the existence of God, love, sex and the meaning of life—only two weeks before Freud chooses to take his own. Not just a powerful debate, this is a profound and deeply touching play about two men who boldly addressed the greatest questions of all time.
Set during the Great Depression, Susannah travels the country, recording lost traditional songs. Hoping to find the one song that will bring her long-awaited recognition, she discovers Pearl Johnson in a Texas prison. With a silky, soulful voice and a wealth of African-American spiritual songs, Pearl seeks information and a chance at freedom. This moving drama chronicles a powerful story about being a woman in a man’s world, being black in a white world, and fighting for one’s soul in a world where anyone can be a commodity.
The season concludes with the highly anticipated sequel to our best selling show of all time! Marvelous Wonderettes: Caps & Gowns takes you to the Springfield High School graduation where we reunite with the Wonderettes. As we learn about their lives and loves—and take a peek into their futures—we are treated to the girls performing classic ‘50s and ‘60s songs such as “Wishin’ And Hopin’,” “Sealed with a Kiss,” “Dedicated To The One I Love,” “Rockin’ Robin,” and many more!
